I don’t know if this will ever make it into your hands, but I have a story to tell you about a young lady you helped over two years ago come out of a shell just because of meeting you and what you said to her. A little over 14 years ago, my daughter, Selina was born long and skinny and her body structure has not really changed since. She grew up with friends that accepted her as being a head taller than them until the 2nd grade and then we moved. She didn’t fit into the new school and was given a hard time about her height to the point that she was becoming very sad. She had a few kids that were OK, but it’s hard when you are made fun of because of how you look. In the 4th grade a soccer teammate and her mom talked me into letting her try softball. I was reluctant because in the past she wouldn’t move the glove and let the ball hit her. She showed me she would move the glove to protect herself so I gave in. She wanted to try pitching and I said OK, and I was very scared because I knew what a hot spot it could be. She has done OK with the position and it helped her confidence for a while in the Summers until school would start.
In 2006 and the 6th grade she was getting good at slinging the ball. She was still being given a hard time about being tall. She started being depressed more about it because the girls stepped up the badgering. They took her down to a point I was very worried. Then the Texas Longhorns came to KU and her favorite pitcher, Cat, was going to be there. I got tickets and we watched an awesome game. When the game was over the Texas team came out to sign autographs. She went through the line with her ball and a USA SB trading card having each girl sign the ball waiting patiently just hoping she had time to meet you. She enjoyed meeting all the other ladies on team and loved how fun they were. Then she got her turn, you signed the ball, you signed the card and then you asked her if she pitched. Her eyes lit up as she answered yes. You said to her, your tall, I saw her eyes drop, and then you told her, It’s a good thing to be tall, especially if you pitch. Her eyes lit up again, Cat Osterman said it was good to be tall. With a few words you made it OK. You took the time and had a picture taken with her and you can see the absolute thrill in her eyes. She watched as you made sure everyone of those young ladies got a signature even when they were calling you to go. She knows, that you know the impact you guys can have. She stands tall now, proud of her height and I credit you for this. She has even went far as to wear her size 12 foot in 3” heels to her band concert last Spring. At 14, now soon to be 15, she is 6’ and she says her goal is 6’2” like Cat, but is happy to be at least 6’0” .
We went to the Topeka, June 10 exhibition game with a teammate, and the pitching coaches daughter. They were thrilled to watch the game even with the storm delay threat. Each girl brought a ball for the team to sign, but she also brought her picture she had taken with you at KU. They stood in line and then you were told it was time to go. She saw you signing fast as you could to get as many ladies something as you could. The girls were 2 people back and they pulled you away. They didn’t get any signatures of any of the others at all because they wouldn’t stray from your line. She was disappointed , but not devastated because she saw how hard you tried to get as many done as you could. Her comment to me was, Mom, if I ever get this far I want to be like Cat, see how she tries to take care of all of us.
Please keep doing what your doing because I know one young lady you made a tremendous impact on with her self esteem. I am just so grateful to you taking the time at that KU game and making her realize it’s OK to be tall. She absolutely loves being tall now and doesn’t care what anyone says about it. I know this was a long letter, but I had to tell you about her. She is a good kid and you helped her so much. I can not say thank you enough.
